There are many problems in this world, one being how people feel about video games, if that makes sense. Video games have always been categorized by one set genre of games. The genre that includes violent shooting, and bloody killers, which is part of the R-rated games including Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. The media only talks about these games because violence and aggressive behavior somewhat “comes out from playing these games.” It’s due to the fact that these certain games are the games that the past killers played before going on their violent rampages. In the article, “Violent video games and real-world violence: Rhetoric versus data” written by Patrick, Charlotte Markey and Juliana French, the authors say video games are nothing but a “casual risk factor for increased aggressive behaviors” (Markey 1). Not to mention, the article is only a point of view from a group of people, on two events. The article is very biased for many reasons. First, the authors base the research on the past school shootings such as the 1999 Columbine High School and Virginia Tech cases.

It solely talks about the video games being the main contributor to the violence. Implying that the video games made them want to do criminal acts. In some cases, people do get angry over video games, but that’s like anything in life. Maybe the video game developers aren’t to blame. Maybe it’s the the people who buy the M-rated games for the kids. That’s why video games have a rated system, to insure that people are playing certain games that are age appropriate. In one discussion paragraph it explains, “There is ample evidence that violent video games do increase aggressive cognition, aggressive affect, and some aggressive behaviors… they may affect other types of… behaviors, such as bullying… or hurling insults” (Markey 12). The reason this article is totally wrong is because it blames video games for making people want to cause chaos. That’s like saying the gun killed the victim, not the perpetrator. Perpetrators have killed for many reason unrelated to video games. Playing video games does not make people want to stab or hurt someone. If anything, video games are where people take their anger out.

For example, if someone is playing a game like Grand Theft Auto, what can possibly make a person angry while playing that game? Nothing, that’s it because it’s a solo based player game. The only real outcome that many people would call negative, is the addiction part. From my personal life, I see the addiction as a positive result. First, playing video games all day keeps people busy. It’s a better addiction than a drug addiction. With a drug addiction, people kill their bodies slowly. With a video games addiction, it keeps the players off the streets. I would call it a safe alternative in my book. However, video games have a much larger impact on people, such as helping people with their emotions.
